Divorce & Separation – Know What You Want And When

Figuring Out What You Want

When you’re getting a divorce, there’s a lot of dividing to do. The division of assets, custody of children, and the division of property.

It’s not always possible to get exactly what you want out of a divorce. But it’s a lot easier if you figure out exactly what you want and let your solicitor know. They can do everything they can to land you in a favourable position.

But before rushing into any decision, you need to think about what each decision means….

If you have children and you’re weighing whether or not you should get a divorce, step back for a moment and take them into consideration.

Are you capable of raising them properly? What about your partner (or ex-partner)?

In the heat of the moment it’s easy to make rash decisions, but after giving yourself some time to cool off, you should approach your divorce with a clear and logical mind.

This is true with the division of property as well. Lots of divorcee’s decide to sell their homes. But ask yourself if that is really the right decision to make. For some it might be, for others it could be a terrible decision.

Is it a bad time to divorce?

There’s never a good time for divorce, but some times are worse than others.
For example, if your children are going through an extremely volatile stage in life such as just starting their primary school education or transitioning to highschool from primary school, it might be better to hold off on your divorce for their sake.

The same can be said for the sake of both your assets. Maybe one of you own a business and it’s going either terrifically or terribly. It might be beneficial for both of you to hold on to the discussion for a while until things settle a little.

These are all reasons why it’s important to have a prenup in place, to know exactly what will happen in the case of divorce and to give both you and your partner some assurance.
